A New York Times Notable Book 2018

'A rebel French writer ... a brilliant storyteller, a master craftsman and one of France's most original writers' - Independent

'The Kites is a novel touched from beginning to end with grace, a great saga about the innate dignity of love that succeeds in the feat of being funny and poetic, tender and sharp, committed and fierce, with a touch of brilliance in the art of dialogue' - Muriel Barbery, author of The Elegance of the Hedgehog

A quiet village in Normandy, 1932. Ludo is ten years old and lives with his uncle, a kindly, eccentric creator of elaborate kites. One day, sitting in a strawberry field, Ludo meets the beautiful young Polish aristocrat Lila. And so begins Ludo's lifelong adventure of love and longing for Lila, who only begins to return his feelings just as Europe descends into the devastation of World War 2. After Poland and France fall, Lila and Ludo are separated. Ludo's friends in the village must find their own ways of resisting: the local restaurateur who is dedicated above all to France's haute cuisine, a Jewish brothel madam who sleeps with her unwitting enemies and Ludo, who cycles past the Nazis every day, passing on messages for the French Resistance - thinking always of Lila.

Автор Romain Gary

Romain Gary was a legendary French novelist, film director, diplomat, and World War II aviator who remains one of the most enigmatic figures in modern literature. Born Roman Kacew in Vilnius in 1914, he moved to France as a young boy with his mother, whose unwavering devotion deeply shaped his life and career. During World War II, he served as a hero in the Free French Air Force under General Charles de Gaulle, earning prestigious military honors for his bravery. Following the war, Gary entered the French diplomatic service, representing his adopted country around the globe, including a prominent assignment as Consul General in Los Angeles. Throughout his lifetime, he authored dozens of celebrated novels, essays, and screenplays written in both French and English. He achieved ultimate literary notoriety as the only writer in history to win the prestigious Prix Goncourt twice, a feat made possible through a legendary literary deception. Since the award is strictly granted once per author, Gary won his first under his own name and his second decades later using the pseudonym Émile Ajar. His masterpiece memoir, Promise at Dawn (La Promesse de l'aube), offers a poignant and humorous tribute to his mother’s boundless ambitions for him. Another of his iconic works, The Life Before Us (La vie devant soi), won hearts worldwide and was adapted into an Academy Award–winning motion picture. Known for his wit, tragicomedy, and deep humanitarian themes, Gary continually explored the complexities of human dignity and identity. He married famous American actress Jean Seberg, forming a high-profile cultural power couple that captivated international media in the 1960s. Until his tragic passing in 1980, he lived a life as cinematic and dramatic as any of his fictional creations. Today, Romain Gary is remembered as a titan of twentieth-century French literature whose brilliant storytelling and legendary secret identities continue to fascinate readers worldwide

Издателство Penguin Books

Penguin Books is an iconic British publishing house that fundamentally revolutionized global reading habits by making quality literature affordable and accessible to the general public. Founded in 1935 by Allen Lane alongside his brothers Richard and John, the company pioneered the modern mass-market paperback format in the United Kingdom. Legend has it that Lane conceived the idea while waiting for a train, realizing that high-quality, inexpensive books were desperately needed for everyday commuters. To make its titles instantly recognizable, the publisher introduced a color-coded cover system, using orange for fiction, green for crime, and blue for biographies. The famous Penguin logo, designed to feel friendly and modern, quickly became one of the most recognizable corporate symbols in literary history. In 1946, the company launched Penguin Classics, a landmark series that brought translated world literature into millions of households across the globe. Penguin also made legal history in 1960 by winning a landmark obscenity trial over D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, marking a pivotal triumph for freedom of expression. Over the decades, the publishing house expanded its reach through specialized imprints like Puffin Books for children and Pelican Books for non-fiction. The publisher has been home to legendary literary icons, including George Orwell, James Joyce, Margaret Atwood, and Salman Rushdie. Today, it operates as a cornerstone of Penguin Random House, the world’s largest trade book publishing organization following a historic merger in 2013. Renowned for its immaculate design heritage, editorial integrity, and commitment to diverse voices, the imprint continues to shape global reading culture. Nine decades after its humble inception, Penguin Books remains a worldwide symbol of literary excellence, intellectual curiosity, and publishing innovation
