Dr Felix Hoenikker, one of the founding 'fathers' of the atomic bomb, has left a deadly legacy to humanity.

For he is the inventor of ice-nine, a lethal chemical capable of freezing the entire planet. Writer Jonah's search for his whereabouts leads him to Hoenikker's three eccentric children, to an island republic in the Caribbean where the absurd religion of Bokononism is practised, to love and to insanity.

Told with deadpan humour and bitter irony, Kurt Vonnegut's cult tale of global destruction is a frightening and funny satire on the end of the world and the madness of mankind.

'One of the warmest, wisest, funniest voices to be found anywhere in fiction' Sam Leith, Daily Telegraph

'A free-wheeling vehicle... An unforgettable ride!' The New York Times

'Vonnegut looked the world straight in the eye and never flinched' J.G. Ballard

Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) was born in Indianapolis.

Автр Kurt Vonnegut

Kurt Vonnegut Jr. was a legendary American author whose unique blend of dark humor, science fiction, and heartfelt humanism made him one of the most beloved literary voices of the twentieth century. Born in Indianapolis in 1922, he studied biochemistry before serving in the United States Army during World War II, an experience that deeply shaped his worldview. During the war, he survived the tragic bombing of Dresden as a prisoner of war, a traumatic event that later formed the emotional core of his masterwork. He achieved massive international fame with his 1969 novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, a groundbreaking classic that introduced readers to the time-traveling protagonist Billy Pilgrim. His writing style was famously simple, direct, and conversational, making profound philosophical observations feel accessible and wildly entertaining to readers of all backgrounds. Across hit novels like Cat's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, and Mother Night, he brilliantly satirized war, technology, politics, and human greed. Readers around the world fell in love with his quirky illustrations, recurring characters, and iconic catchphrases like "so it goes." Beyond his novels, he was a passionate essayist, public speaker, and defender of free speech who constantly advocated for kindness and social justice. His work seamlessly bridged the gap between popular counterculture fiction and high literary acclaim, earning a permanent place in global pop culture. Although he passed away in 2007, his sharp wit and warm empathy continue to resonate with generations of book lovers everywhere. Today, his books remain staples in classrooms, libraries, and personal collections across the world. Kurt Vonnegut Jr. stands as an enduring giant of modern American literature whose timeless humor and compassionate wisdom feel as relevant as ever.

Издателство Penguin Books

Penguin Books is an iconic British publishing house that fundamentally revolutionized global reading habits by making quality literature affordable and accessible to the general public. Founded in 1935 by Allen Lane alongside his brothers Richard and John, the company pioneered the modern mass-market paperback format in the United Kingdom. Legend has it that Lane conceived the idea while waiting for a train, realizing that high-quality, inexpensive books were desperately needed for everyday commuters. To make its titles instantly recognizable, the publisher introduced a color-coded cover system, using orange for fiction, green for crime, and blue for biographies. The famous Penguin logo, designed to feel friendly and modern, quickly became one of the most recognizable corporate symbols in literary history. In 1946, the company launched Penguin Classics, a landmark series that brought translated world literature into millions of households across the globe. Penguin also made legal history in 1960 by winning a landmark obscenity trial over D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, marking a pivotal triumph for freedom of expression. Over the decades, the publishing house expanded its reach through specialized imprints like Puffin Books for children and Pelican Books for non-fiction. The publisher has been home to legendary literary icons, including George Orwell, James Joyce, Margaret Atwood, and Salman Rushdie. Today, it operates as a cornerstone of Penguin Random House, the world’s largest trade book publishing organization following a historic merger in 2013. Renowned for its immaculate design heritage, editorial integrity, and commitment to diverse voices, the imprint continues to shape global reading culture. Nine decades after its humble inception, Penguin Books remains a worldwide symbol of literary excellence, intellectual curiosity, and publishing innovation
